Steve has represented Molesey East ward at Elmbridge Borough Council since 2014 and was re-elected in the May 2022 local elections. He also serves the community as Surrey County Councillor for East Molesey and Esher.
He writes: "I remain enormously grateful to the people of East Molesey for electing me as their Borough Councillor and for all the support and encouragement I have received. Representing this wonderful community is an absolute joy and a responsibility which I take seriously.
Since taking office I’ve played a full part in Molesey’s political life. My achievements include saving Vine Hall from closure, taking the lead in opposing the overbearing Jolly Boatman scheme, securing the agreement of Surrey County Council to replace Mole Bridge, helping residents with a wide range of local issues and concerns. During the pandemic I obtained grants for Molesey businesses to prevent them going to the wall, led litter picks at Hurst Park and delivered for the Molesey Foodbank.
At Council, I have served on around a dozen committees and am chairman of the North Area Planning Sub-Committee as well as Shadow Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture. I am very active in the Esher & Walton Conservative Association, helping colleagues and managing our publicity.
Communication is a hugely important part of the councillor role and I make every effort to inform residents through my Molesey News publications and via social media, including growing my Facebook page to more than 1,400 subscribers.
What are my current priorities?
There are big issues still to be addressed, such as improving the roads in Molesey and Esher and opening up the network of cycle paths. We need a Local Plan that does not disadvantage Molesey and Esher, holding Glenlyn directors’ feet to the fire to improve their failing surgery, resolving the problem of the illegal moorings that blight our riverside, and to ensure the community is not disproportionately affected by aircraft noise.
As Surrey County Councillor for the area I can deliver a joined-up service to our residents and exert some influence for us as I am also a member of the Surrey Conservative Cabinet.
About me
I am married to Kim and have three sons of school age. I was a community reporter for local newspapers for many years, giving me a good grounding in the types of issues that residents care about. I worked in communications for the Police Federation and I am currently a freelance journalist and editor, also working part-time for the Conservative Party as an election agent.
